THE countdown has begun with only nine days remaining before Bury Carnival is staged for the first time in the new millennium.

Finishing touches are being put to preparations for the big day by the Bury Times which has taken over the running of the town's premier annual event.

The previous carnival organisers, the Bury Lions Club, scrapped the event after the 1999 gala because of a combination of circumstances.

However, the carnival is being resurrected by the Bury Times, supported by Bury Lions, Tower FM and Greater Manchester Police, to ensure the popular event again plays a key role in community life.

After an absence of one year, Bury Carnival will be staged on Sunday, June 10 at Chesham Fields between 9am-6pm.

Among the bumper attractions are:

American Wrestling Superstars

Line Dancing Challenge

Tower FM Roadshow

Army Display

Go karting

West Lancs Dog Display Team.

Fun fair

As always, a large assortment of commercial and non-commercial stalls will be set up on the field.

Bury's mayor Councillor Paul Nesbit will officially open the gala around 10.30am.
