A GRANDAD was left lying in the road with serious head injuries by a hit and run driver.

Howard Jones, 85, of Walton Lane, Nelson, was taken to Burnley General Hospital where his condition was today described as 'stable'.

He was hit at the junction of Barkerhouse Road and Lonsdale Street by a Rover 220 Coupe which was being driven along Barkerhouse Road towards Leeds Road .

Police said the driver of the car did not stop to check on Mr Jones who was discovered lying in the road.

Witnesses said they saw the driver pull into a side street, park the car and walk away from the scene.

A police spokesman said: "It was apparent from examination of the vehicle that the pedestrian had been in contact with the car windscreen."

Police were today still trying to locate the driver of the car.

He is described as an Asian male, late 20s, thin build, with short dark hair, wearing a cream jumper and black trousers and possibly sandals.

Neighbour Enid Beecroft said: "I regularly see him trotting off somewhere. He's lived here about five years now. He goes shopping and he goes dancing. He has health problems but he battles with them. I know he has three or four sons and grandchildren but he is a very private person."
