A DARWEN artist realises a dream tomorrow when he opens opens his first art exhibition -- but he's not bothered if his pictures sell.

Bob Lakey, 70, of Carr Road, has produced 16 pencil drawings -- three of famous figures from Darwen's past -- for the two week-exhibition.

Bob was a marine, a builder, and, for ten years until his retirement, a bin man. He says he received no formal art training, and draws for his own pleasure.

His has exhibited only two drawings in a Darwen artist's competition10 years ago.

And to make sure this exhibition works he has conducted exhaustive research into Darwen's past.

He was inundated with information following his request for information in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph about his Darwen subjects, rag and bone man Tommy Thompson -- aka 'Valderee', bantam boxer Billy Brennan and strong man Bill Hunt. Bob said: "It was something I promised myself years ago that I would do an exhibition again. I've never had any art training, but I always loved art when I was younger."
