A FATHER of three who offended while on a suspended jail term and then did not do the community service he was given as punishment, is behind bars.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Lee Ormonde, 28, had been warned by Judge Raymond Bennett what awaited him if he didn't do as he as told -- and the judge said he had only himself to blame.

Ormonde, of Padiham Road, Burnley, had appeared for deferred sentence, after earlier breaching a supended prison term. He was sent to jail for a month and must also serve seven days on top, after admitting failing to surrender.

Roger Baldwin, prosecuting, said in November 1998, Ormonde was sentenced to four months, supended for two years, for possessing heroin. In June 2000, he was given 100 hours community service for committing an offence of driving while disqualified..

Last July, he appeared in court for breach of the suspended sentence and sentence was deferred to see if he could comply with the community service order .He did not attend court when the six months was up and a bench warrant was issued. The court was told Ormonde had done 10 hours of the 100-hour order.

Elisabeth Nicholls, defending, urged the judge to adjourn the case to see if the defendant could complete the community service order.

Ormonde had turned up for community service but had been turned away because of lack of work. He became disheartened and instead of plodding on with the order, he voted with his feet and effectively buried his head in the sand.
