NOW that Darwen Valley Arts Centre has a new sculpture department, new students are needed to fill it.

The department was officially opened last week by Lancashire poet Jim Atherton and open days have been held to show the public what is on offer for future students.

During the open days there have been demonstrations of the skills which will be taught, tours of the new department and advice and information on enrolling.

The private school, on Sudell Road, runs throughout the day and evening and hosts a variety of courses for all ages.

They begin in September with sculpture for beginners, carving and casting plus much more.

Allan Fielding, artist and tutor, said: "The department was created because of demand so there has been a lot of interest. A number of students of all ages have already enrolled."

As well as the courses, which will last between 15 and 18 weeks, there will also be an open studio practice one day a week.
