ROSSENDALE Council's plans to appoint an arts development officer are expected to be given financial backing from Lancashire County Council.

The role of the officer will be to develop, promote, implement and monitor arts initiatives in the Valley.

The officer will work in partnership with local arts organisations and the community.

Overall cost including a project budget for three years will be £78,500 and the North West Arts Board has agreed to contribute £12,000 each year.

The county's communications, information and life-long learning executive will be recommended on Friday to agree to providing £6,000 for 2001/2, £3,000 for the post and £3,000 for a project budget.

It will also be asked to agree in principle to the same level of support in the following two years subject to the availability of resources.

Rossendale Council will be left with costs of £24,500.

A report to committee says Rossendale is involved in supporting organisations and activities such as Mid Pennine Arts, Horse and Bamboo Theatre and the Irwell Sculpture Rail.

The new post will help maximise the partnership potential as well as developing new areas of work.
