REGARDING Sam Spence's and Ron Crane's remarks (Letters, September 6), it never ceases to amaze me how some Blackburn citizens appear to take great delight in knocking their town.

Might I make the following suggestions to keep them and their like happy?

Firstly, all trees in the borough should be chopped down and all flowers, shrubs and greenery, including the town's parks, be eradicated and concreted over. After all, who wants greenery in a town like Blackburn?

Secondly, scrap all the statues and artworks; not forgetting the Cathedral's new living, breathing 'stained glass' sculpture. No call for things like that in Blackburn.

Thirdly, redesign the town's coat of arms -- I suggest a nice skull-and cross-bones design bearing the legend: "Abandon hope all ye who enter here" as most appropriate?

Finally, why don's we change the town's name from Blackburn to Bleakburn? Then perhaps the moaners and whiners would have the town they deserve.
