LEIGH RMI 3 FARNBOROUGH TOWN 0

WHAT a difference a week has made to Leigh's fortunes.

Manager Steve Waywell was at his wits end after he had witnessed his side slump to their fifth consecutive defeat, but three wins in seven days have transformed his despair into delight.

"The lads have been tremendous. We have scored seven goals in three games and picked up three wins, you can't ask for much better than that," he said.

"Previously we had not had the rub of the green and although I am a firm believer that luck evens itself out over the season I was beginning to despair and wondered if we were ever going to get a break."

Leigh's reversal of fortunes have coincided with the elevation to the first team of former Manchester United junior Michael Twiss. The striker has grabbed his opportunity with both hands and two goals in consecutive games have cemented his place in the starting line-up.

"We had a long list of injuries and without them Michael may not have had the opportunity," admitted Waywell.

Two injury time goals from Twiss gave the scoreline a rather lobsided view, however, as Leigh can count themselves fortunate they took all three points.

Farnborough, who had previously lost one game in 10, prised open Leigh's defence at an alarming rate in the first quarter and only three glaring misses from Joff Vansittart kept the home side on level terms.

Ian Monk, who was Leigh's most influential player, showed the visitors how to finish in the 38th minute when he rounded a defender on the edge of the box before curling home a shot into the top corner of the net.

From then on RMI were the dominant force and tightened up at the back, never looked in any further trouble.

Twiss had the final word with a grandstand finish when he raced onto a through ball, rounded the keeper and slotted home. A minute later, he shrugged off a defender and fired a low shot from outside the box that the keeper could only touch into the goal.
