BRAVE fire crews who helped save the lives of six people in one night have been given a special commendation.

Firefighters from Preston's Blue Watch, along with Cenys Duncan, a fire control operator -- one of the vital staff who answer emergency phone calls -- all received their awards from Chief Fire Officer Peter Holland on Tuesday, October 9.

The heroes were honoured for their life-saving efforts in July, when the team rescued victims of two fires. In the first, a worker had been trapped in the first floor of a burning building in Avenham after an arsonist set fire to the stairs. Cenys kept the caller calm and helped guide firefighters to him and two other trapped workers.

Then, just a few hours later, Cenys guided the same firemen into a burning house in Deepdale to rescue four children.

Along with Cenys, Preston firefighters David Cook, Mark Sloan, Paul Fryer and Keith Manogue received awards.
