THE Leigh pilot of a Lancaster bomber which crashed during the Second World War will be remembered by a monument being erected in Holland.

Alfred Boydell was just 20-years-old and on his first flight when his aircraft came down in the Nazi occupied country in 1943.

The people of Helden have been collecting money and plan to build a monument in the town in memory of the seven-man British aircrew who died there.

Researchers are trying to trace any living relatives of Alfred, to invite them to attend next June's unveiling ceremony.

Alfred was born in 1923 and would be 78-years-old now had his life not been tragically cut short. He lived in Leigh with his mother, Margaret Ellen Boydell and his father James Boydell.
