TWO well known faces in Rishton who were honoured by Rishton area council handed over their awards to Rishton Centre for the Elderly where they were put on display.
Former road sweeper Gerry Newton, 61, of Derby Street, Accrington, who was honoured with a MBE in 1996 for his services to the community, presented his plaque to Rishton Centre this week.
His award will stand proudly in the dining room next to the plaque of chairman of the centre, Jim Clarke, of Spring Street, who was also recognised for his charitable work in the area.
Mr Newton worked as a road sweeper for 15 years but was forced to park up his cart in 1999 after doctors diagnosed problems with his heart.
He was a well-known face on Rishton's streets and got to know generations of youngsters from his base at Norden High School.
Originally from Great Harwood, Mr Clarke arrived in Rishton 50 years ago while he was serving in the RAF.
He is much admired for his work at Rishton Baptist Church, Rishton Churches Together, Rishton Centre, Rishton charities panel and the Crime and Disorder Panel.
