TWO police officers were allegedly attacked and injured, one losing consciousness, the other having his eye gouged, after they tried to arrest a man who "went berserk", a jury was told.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Jason Gorton, 26, kicked and punched Jonathan Riddell and Peter Jones, causing PC Riddell to stumble to the ground, and hitting PC Jones repeatedly to the heard.

Gorton, of Girvan Grove, Burnley, denies unlawful wounding, assault causing actual bodily harm and using a firearm -- a CS gas spray -- with intent.

Timothy Brennand, prosecuting, said the officers had gone to arrest the defendant in a ginnel.

PC Riddell removed his handcuffs and went towards him, but Gorton went berserk, clenched his fists, became aggressive and said he was not being cuffed.

Gorton kicked and punched both officers.

A violent struggle followed and Gorton hit PC Riddell on the side of the head, causing him to drop his handcuffs.

The officers struggled to control the defendant and PC Jones struck him several times on the leg, with no apparent effect.

Mr Brennand said as PC Riddell tried to restrain Gorton he managed to take hold of the officer's CS gas spray and discharged it into his face.

The gas appeared to have no effect on Gorton and he shouted for help to the large group of onlookers which was gathering.
