ENGLAND today sprung a major shock by calling up uncapped duo Martyn Ball and Richard Johnson for the tour of India.

The two rookies join the 16-man party following the controversial withdrawal of Andy Caddick and Robert Croft because of safety fears.

Gloucestershire off-spinner Ball is a surprise choice ahead of veteran Middlesex star Phil Tufnell.

Somerset ace Johnson got the nod despite fellow seamer Chris Silverwood of Yorkshire being favourite to replace Caddick.

England will now embark on their first tour of India in eight years with one of their most inexperienced attacks ever.

Just five players in the squad have played more than 20 Tests.
