POLICE are warning elderly people to keep their wallets or purses out of view after an 83-year-old woman was robbed of £900 in broad daylight.

The elderly woman was walking along the back alley of London Terrace at 1.15pm with her shopping when a youth ran up to her from behind and snatched her shopping bag.

Her purse, which contained £900, was in the bag.

Sgt Andrea Bradbury of Darwen police said: "The lady was not assaulted but was left extremely distressed as a result of the incident.

"This is a reminder to elderly people to keep their purses out of sight and, if possible, use something like a money bag to keep cash and valuables in."

A youth, who was in the area at the time, was chased by police into the Two Gates estate but Sgt Bradbury said they did not yet know if he was connected with the purse snatch.

She added the police were very keen to hear from anyone who might have information about the theft -- especially if anyone knew a young person who had recently acquired a large amount of cash.

She added it was possible quite a few people could have seen or heard the incident, as it took place in a built-up area. Sgt Bradbury urged witnesses to come forward.

The teenage thief is described as white, with short dark hair, of medium height and under 20-years-old. He wore dark trousers, which were either jeans or tracksuit bottoms, and a light-coloured top.

Anyone with any information should ring DC John Entwistle at Darwen CID on 353841 or Crimestoppers in on 0800 555 111.
