PADIHAM boss Graham Howarth is looking for his side to start converting their chances as they prepare to meet Nelson at home in NWCL Division Two (kick off 2pm).

The Storks, who lost top striker Lee Chambers to Kendal Town earlier this season, thought they had kickstarted their season with a 5-1 win against Holker Old Boys but slipped back into old habits in the next game against Oldham Town when they missed a hatful of chances and lost 3-1.

"We had enough chances in that match to win twice," said Howarth. "We have been playing quite well but have struggled to put the ball in the net."

Rising star Martin Thompson, who is just 17 and is seen as the long-term answer to Padiham's goalscoring problems, is back in the reserves to avoid burnout. Dean Stowe, who is getting married tomorrow, is not available nor is his best man Damian Ingham.

Padiham and Nelson drew 1-1 earlier in the season. "We probably shaded it," said Howarth. "I have been talking to (Nelson manager) John Bailey and he says they are drawing a lot of games."

Meanwhile, Bailey says there is 'no panic' at Victoria Park despite their recent loss of form which has seen them go six games without a league win.

"There is not need to panic yet," said the boss. "But we do need to address our league form soon rather than later.

"Anyone in the top six or seven could put a run together and be up there. We are all playing for second spot, with Stand so far clear, but I am sure they will have a sticky patch like everyone else."

Both Padiham and Nelson have had what Bailey calls 'sketchy' form of late.

"We both need to bounce back. Our problem is that we can't keep a clean sheet. Mike Smith is out with a long term injury and we need a central defender.

"I have been speaking to someone but it will be too late for this weekend - and we need to get someone in before we play Clitheroe in the FA Vase next weekend."
