A 14-year-old boy died at the wheel of a Reliant Rialto during a police pursuit which started in Bury.
Craig Whelan from Salford suffered fatal injuries when the three-wheeled car collided with a road sign at junction 15 of the M60.
The smash happened at 12.45am on Saturday (Nov 3). Traffic officers from Bury had earlier spotted the Reliant car as it was being driven along Rochdale Road. They followed the car as the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
The car then joined the M66 motorway at Heap Bridge and when it reached Simister Island, it jumped a red light and sped off along the M60 towards Prestwich and then on towards Swinton.
Inspector John Sargeson, head of Bury's Traffic Unit, said: "At this point the officers following the Reliant made the decision to try and stop the vehicle.
"The car came off the Junction 15 slip-road leading to the A666. It then hit a sign post."
Craig was taken by ambulance to Hope Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident has now been voluntarily referred to the Police Complaints Authority and the accident is being investigated by officers from Salford.
