CONSULTANTS are to be appointed to prepare a skate strategy for Burnley.

The cost is estimated at £3-5000 with the cost of providing skateboard facilities said to be anything from £40-80,000.

The funds are available through government single regeneration fund and neighbourhood renewal funding.

A recent Forum for Skateboarders attracted dozens of young skaters who heard councillors, youth workers and town centre management discuss ways of building facilities for skateboarders, inliners and BMX riders.

Members of Burnley's Executive have now given the go-ahead for consultants to prepare the skate strategy.

Coun Barry Gutteridge, executive member for leisure and welfare said: "We need to identify proper sites and local residents need to be consulted as well as the youngsters and everyone else. We need to make sure the facilities are safe."

Sites including Fulledge recreation ground and Queens Park will be considered as possible locations for major facilities.
