BURNLEY'S Community Wardens were left disappointed after a Home Office Minister due to visit the town to discuss the scheme failed to show.

Angela Eagle had promised to meet the wardens who are trying to build up community spirit and cut down on anti-social behaviour.

The scheme, which began in July of this year, has government funding from the Single Regeneration Budget of £500,000 over six years.

Wardens are now based in the Coal Clough, Barclay and Burnley Wood areas and hopefully will later be extended to include the old Barclay, Calder, Daneshouse and Trinity wards.

They are involved in a variety of roles such as street patrols, project work -- often in partnership with other agencies -- providing support to community groups and residents organisations, supporting individuals and liaising between various groups.

There is a particular focus in the work of community safety, anti-social behaviour and monitoring environmental issues.

Local residents of Piccadilly Close had also gathered to meet the minister, but were told she would not be arriving.

A spokesman for Ms Eagle said that unfortunately, a traffic jam on the M62 motorway meant that she was unable to keep her promise.
