A GRIEVING husband has spent the time since his wife's death raising £1,000 to donate to Christies.

Jean Boardman, of Gordon Street, Leigh lost her battle with cancer on August 18. Now, her husband of 42 years, John, wants to show his appreciation to the hospital where she received treatment.

With the help of family, friends and neighbours, John collected £600 through door-to-door donations. He is now making the amount up to £1,000 himself, and donating it to the hospital.

John said: "When Jean first went in, they couldn't do enough for her."

John's son, Steve, has applied to become an authorised collector for the charity, and is currently trying to fill a giant whiskey bottle with coppers. The bottle is on the bar at the Eagle and Hawk in Chapel Street, Leigh.

When it is full, a raffle will be held to guess the amount inside, with the winner receiving a bottle of whiskey. All proceeds are being split between Christies and children's charity, NSPCC.

The pub is also organising a sponsored fancy dress walk in aid of the two charities. The walk will take place on Sunday, December 2.
