OLD soldiers will parade throughout the borough on Sunday to remember the millions of heroes who died in conflict.

And it will be a day of double duty for the Mayor, Cllr John Hilton, who will be at both the Wigan and Golborne services.

In Leigh, the parade will assemble at the Marsh Gymnasium, Ulleswater Street, at 10.15am, and march via Railway Road, Market Street, Lord Street, Charles Street and Church Street to the cenotaph.

After a service, the procession will return via Church Street, Vernon Street, Bradshawgate, Market Street and St Mary's Way, to the Town Hall Square for the salute, prior to dispersal.

And Leigh Royal British Legion stalwart Bert Paxford reminds participants that after dismissal, they are welcome to sample branch hospitality at Leigh Conservative Club.

Mr Paxford said: "We are really grateful for the club's help in providing refreshments and assistance with our Poppy Appeal."

In Atherton, marchers will congregate at the Formby Hall at 10.30am and proceed via Market Street and Leigh Road to the cenotaph. The return procession will be via Leigh Road, Mealhouse Lane, Bolton Road and High Street.

A service will be held at the memorial in Barn Lane, Golborne, at 2.30pm. It will be preceded by a procession from the Legh Court car park, Legh Street, assembling at 2.15pm. The mayor will lay a wreath.

In Hindley, the procession assembles on the district office car park in Cross Street from 10.30am, leaving at 10.45am. It will leave the cenotaph and continue to St Peter's Church for a service. The parade will reassemble and return via Atherton Road, George Street, Chapel Green Lane, Bridge Street, Market Street and Cross Street.

The Lowton service will be at St Mary's at 10.30am, and will be preceded by an assembly in the schoolyard at 10.20am. Wreaths will be laid by representatives of local organisations.

The Platt Bridge parade will leave Wigan Street at 10.40am and proceed via New Street, Platt Street and Liverpool Road, halting at the cenotaph for the laying of wreaths at 11am. The parade will move along Liverpool Road and Church Road for a service at St Nathaniel's Church, before returning to the Scout hut for dispersal.

In Tyldesley, marchers will assemble on the Market Square at 10.20am, proceeding to the cenotaph via Elliott Street, Manchester Road and Hough Lane, and returning by the same route.
