MEP Chris Davies's outburst of anger directed at the proprietor

of Wetherspoon's chain of pubs for actively supporting the "Keep the Pound" campaign gives us a clear insight into the European Union's attitude towards free speech and democratic principles.

Mr Davies alleges that Wetherspoon's are not promoting both sides of the European argument but surely, even Mr Davis must be aware, Europe has been a topic of conversation in the papers and on TV for at least the last 20 years, during which time media and public have examined both sides of the argument thoroughly.

What we are now witnessing is one business manager's reaction to the idea of giving up the pound and surrendering Britain's sovereignty to Brussels for ever. Understandably, Mr Davies would like all opposition to European Federalism to be suppressed so that he and his colleagues can steamroller their plans for a European super state through parliament quietly without objection.

But this is not going to happen as Mr Davies is suddenly beginning to realise, hence his latest spurious argument against the Wetherspoon's campaign to preserve the United Kindom's independent status.
