PLANS for a traffic calming scheme in Earby will be considered by councillors next week after a local meeting highlighted the need for safety measures.

During the meeting at Earby Springfield Primary School, ways in which to progress with a school travel plan were also discussed.

The latest scheme design was presented to school governors and ward councillors and both the headteacher and governors said they were happy that consideration had been given to extending the project.

It was thought a previous proposal for a 'traffic throttle' may have had a negative effect on traffic maneouvres in and out of Bailey Street at busy school times and it was suggested that a stop sign be installed at the Chapel Street and Stoney Bank Road junction.

Earby councillors felt that instead of rumble strips near the junction, it would be better to provide a large red patch with slow written on it, which would prevent the possibility of creating a noise nuisance.

Councillor Chris Tennant also asked whether it would be possible to introduce waiting restrictions in Stoney Bank Road between Bailey Street and Chapel Street.

There is currently no school crossing patrol and children there said in a survey that the use of one was a high priority.
