RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans has vowed to lead the fight to stop Gibraltar being 'sold out' to the Spanish by the British Government.

Tory Mr Evans, currently holidaying in Spain, spent New Year's Eve in the British outpost and said people living in the area felt aggrieved at talks taking place between Spain and Britain about the future of the colony.

It is believed the Rock will be handed back to the Spanish -- ending centuries of tension between the two countries.

But Mr Evans claimed that people living in the area wanted to have their say on their future -- and didn't want to be handed over.

He said: "I am very angry at the plans to sell out the people of Gibraltar as has been suggested in remarks made by the Prime Minister.

"It is a dependent part of the United Kingdom and a very patriotic part of it at that. The onus is on us to help Gibraltar remain part of the UK.

"It is great fun to come here and people love coming here. We should not spoil it."
