A Blackburn Rovers FA Cup winner's medal dating back to 1890 has sold for £5,000 at auction.
The highest bidder for the solid gold medal, which belonged to defender John Barton, is thought to be a
collector.
Rovers won the match against Sheffield Wednesday 6-1.
The medal turned up at an Ewood Park valuation day when a Darwen pensioner presented her grandfather's medal for an estimate.
Sports memorabilia
auctioneer Oliver Hambly said: "I am still a little
surprised such a small piece was the highest-selling item but we are delighted."
Also on auction in the sale at the Coventry City ground was a Blackburn Rovers number 11 home shirt, worn by Howard Kendall in 1983 on his last day with the team. It sold for the predicted £300.
A souvenir booklet
recording the 49,000 record crowd at a Rovers match on January 1 1914 failed to sell.
The next valuation day at Ewood Park is in June.
