PENDLE'S normally popular triathlon event has been cancelled after only four local people entered and organisers are deciding whether to scrap the event on a permanent basis.

People are being asked to give their views on the triathlon or ideas for a replacement event.

The sporting event, which was postponed last year due to the foot and mouth crisis, was re-scheduled for April 28 and usually attracts more than 200 competitors from all over the country.

This year there were only 60 entrants for the re-scheduled competition only four of which were Pendle people.

Alison Goode, regional recreation manager for Pendle Leisure said: "We have reviewed the situation and decided that it wasn't viable to continue with the event this year considering the amount of work, time and staffing needed. "Another big consideration was the fact that we would have to close West Craven Sports Centre to the public and with only four entrants from the local Pendle area we thought it would be more beneficial to the local community and Pendle Leisure Trust to cancel.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused to supporters, sponsors and athletes."

Pendle Leisure Trust is currently reviewing the event in its entirety.

Although a popular event in past years, organisers of the Pendle Triathlon believe it may have run its course.
