IAN Moore's goal tally may be subject to debate but what is without question is the success of his partnership with David Johnson.

Before this afternoon's clash with Grimsby at Blundell Park the pair had netted eight times in six games where they have been on the pitch together - although it is seven if you are to listen to Kevin Ball.

But such has been the threat of the potent pair, they know the goal tally could have been several more.

And they know the importance of keeping hitting that target after Clarets slipped to sixth place last night following Millwall's win at Coventry.

One man who is not surprised by the success of Johnson at Turf Moor is his former Nottingham Forest team mate Jack Lester.

"He did very well at Ipswich and you do not become a bad player overnight," said Lester. "For one reason or another we never got to play much together but I know how good he is.

"Things did not go well for him down here and I can't put my finger on why. But he is quick, he is good in the air with a great spring and he is also a good finisher.

"He came to Forest for a big fee but I don't think that was his problem.

"It just never really happened for him but I think that he is showing what he can do at Burnley."

Lester may be hoping to see Johnson do well for the Clarets but he was backing his former club Grimsby Town to inflict some misery on his old team mate today. But he said: "Hopefully I can do him a favour by scoring against Preston next weekend in the last game of the season."

After Johnson's arrival, he and Moore were thrown together against Preston North End because of the suspension of leading scorer Gareth Taylor and the impact was immediate as both scored in the first half.

Against Bradford it was Johnson who scored and then came the one game when neither notched, the failed experiment at Bramall Lane of playing three men up front.

For the next game against Wolves, Moore was left on the bench in favour of Taylor but he came on after the break and both he and Johnson found the net as the Clarets narrowly failed to come back from a 3-0 deficit.

Manager Stan Ternent opted to stick with the pair for the trip to Portsmouth and once again Johnson was on the scoresheet.

Finally a week ago Johnson, and possibly Moore, were at it again, their goals clinching a priceless 2-0 victory over Gillingham.

The unlucky Taylor and injury hit Robbie Blake have been knocked down the pecking order by the deadly duo but with the play-offs still very much the target, it could yet be all hands on deck before the end of the season.

But for now it is Moore and Johnson leading the line and if the goals continue to flow they might just lead the way to the Promised Land of the Premiership.
