A RETIRED headmistress has received the start date for her two-year teaching project in West Africa.

Kath Wilkins, 64, of Avondale Road, Darwen, will fly out to Ghana on May 12 to a Voluntary Service Overseas Project resource centre.

She revealed her plans in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph two weeks ago when she told how she has received 20 vaccinations to ensure her safety in the sub-Saharan continent.

Her task will be to help Ghanaian teachers improve by passing on her experiences at Holy Trinity School and as an Ofsted Inspector.

However she will only be paid the same salary as the Ghanaians -- £2,500 a year.

Kath says the worst part will be waving goodbye to her five children and six grandchildren.

"I am not really thinking about what I will miss rather about what I can gain." she said.
