STAFF at an East Lancashire health trust who don't know their bytes from their hard drives will soon be able to throw away their L-plates, after starting courses which will give them the new European Computer Driving Licence.
The Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust has opened a new training 2000 LearnDirect training centre, which aims to give staff the chance to learn new computer skills and bring others up to date.
The trust aims to have 10 per cent of its workforce with the driving licence qualification by March next year.
Trust chairman Ian Woolley said: "The NHS is increasingly dependent on information technology to assist in the provision of patient care and it is vitally important that our staff have the necessary skills to use IT safely and effectively."
Jeff Cowburn, chief executive of Training 2000, said: "We are delighted to have been able to set up this alliance with the NHS trust and we look forward to both the relationship and the facility being developed." The centre is open to all trust staff free of charge.
