RESIDENTS in the Ribble Valley have 28 days to comment on proposed criteria for evaluating tyre-burning at Castle Cement in Clitheroe.

The company was given the green light to use scrap tyres as an alternative fuel to its controversial chemical waste Cemfuel for a trial period by Government watchdog the Environment Agency.

But agency bosses demanded that the company come up with a set of criteria for monitoring the trials first.

A series of "critical success factors" drafted by Castle Cement has now been released for public consultation.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "Results of the trial will be compared with the critical success factors once they are finalised. If Castle Cement has performed satisfactorily and any queries arising from the consultation are addressed, the agency will permit the continued use of tyres as a fuel at Ribblesdale."

Environmental campaigners said they were keeping an open mind on the firm's proposal.

The draft criteria are available fat Ribble Valley Council Offices in Church Walk, Clitheroe, or a consultation document can be obtained from the Environment Agency on 01772 339882.

Responses should be sent to Lynn Heathcote, Environment Agency, Lutra House, Dodd Way, Walton Summit, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 8BX, by June 27.
