JIMMY ANDERSON followed in Kyle Hogg's footsteps to make a big impression on his Lancashire debut.

The Burnley youngster bounced back from an expensive first spell to fire out two Surrey wickets, and surprised several more batsmen with his big asset - pace.

He launched his career with a hostile bouncer at Mark Ramprakash and after going for 27 in the rest of his opening five-over burst, returned to have Surrey's acting captain Ian Ward caught behind with another throat ball.

Anderson added the wicket of Surrey's Championship debutant Rikki Clarke for an impressive 41 late on the first day and with Hogg as accurate as he has been since coming into the side at the start of the season, Lancashire's teenage pair delighted another good Old Trafford crowd.

But there was a worry for Lancashire with Gary Keedy finding some turn to take three wickets in a marathon 33-over stint - and Surrey's Pakistani spin wizard Saqlain Mushtaq licking his lips in the pavilion.

Keedy led the fightback after Surrey had reached 143 for one.

with a second wicket stand of 125 between Ian Ward and Mark Ramprakash.

He trapped Nadeem Shahid lbw and bowled Ally Brown, holding his nerve after the former England man had launched him for two straight sixes.

Hogg had broken the second wicket stand with a brilliant throw from deep square leg to run out Ramprakash for 71, and Anderson then returned for his second spell to send back Ward for 61.

But Surrey recovered from 177 for five with Clarke sharing a sixth wicket stand of 101 with the wicket keeper Jon Batty, before Anderson broke their partnership by having Clarke caught at second slip.

"Jimmy has got something a bit different from our other seamers, and he's

done ok," explained manager Mike Watkinson, who stressed that John Wood was

again unlucky to miss out on selection.

"He was perhaps a little nervous early on but he's come back to bowl with

more control and taken a couple of important wickets."

There were no wickets for Peter Martin but he continued his superb form by

bowling 22 overs for only 28 runs, and had no luck at all.
