The old boys from Bacup Cricket Club upset the odds to prevent league champions Trinity from 'doing the double' and give retiring manager Steve Bird the perfect send-off.

For the 30 and 40-somethings from Bacup failed to read the script and leading goal scorer Callum Jones proving to be the party pooper.

Jones, with 50 league goals to his name this season, opened the scoring after just eight minutes after latching on to a through ball from Alan Booth to slide the ball past Clifford Smith.

Trinity, who have won the double twice since the league formed in 1977, drew level thanks to a low drive from outside the area from man of the match Jonny O'Brien.

But hopes of a third double took nose dive just before the break when the Booth and Jones combination undid the Trinity re-guard to put Bacup back in front. Trinity poured forward after the break in search of an equaliser but Bacup's defence held firm with centre back John Boys in fine form to keep big centre forward Lee Wren in check.

And young keeper Kier Lord, in his first season with Bacup, produced a string of fine saves to keep the champions at bay.

Bacup then clinched the cup in the final minutes when substitute Mark Rostron cooly chipped the keeper to score.

For Bacup, it was the first time they had won the Burnley League's showpiece final.

Bacup manager Neal Wilkinson said: "We played in three cup finals on Turf Moor in the 1980s and lost them all and now with a team of veterans we go and win it with virtually the same sent of players. Maybe we were just too young back then!"

Retiring Bird said: "It would have been nice to go out with the double but it wasn't to be. The cup has a habit of playing nasty tricks on you but I have had 30 good years with the club and in that time have been lucky enough to win a lot of trophies."
