REGARDING all this talk about lighting up Darwen Tower (LET, May 23), it will not be the first time it has been illuminated.
Many years ago, when I was a youngster, about seven of us from our gang, 'The Bottle Back Lot,' decided to go up there one winter's night with candles in jars to wave them to other lads watching out on the Car Row Bottoms.
When we got to the tower with our candle-lit jars and waved them, the gamekeeper, Owd Ingham, came over to see what it was all about.
He was a great man -- he knew the moor and he knew us as well, so when he saw it was us kids, he laughed his head off.
So, we can claim to be the first.
