IN keeping with tradition the heavens opened for yesterday's Great Harwood Agricultural Show, but nothing could dampen the spirits.

More than 5,000 visitors flocked to showground off Balfour Street for the 136th show, which included show jumping, husky displays, duck and dog herding, vintage vehicles and all the fun of the fair .

The outbreak of foot and mouth meant that last year's show had to be cancelled and sheep and cattle were banned this year. But there were still sections for light horses, heavy horses, dogs, rabbits and poultry.

Geoff Hanson, chairman of Great Harwood Agricultural Society, said: "Because we were able to offer free entry this time many more people will come back next year."

Coun Sandra Hayes, Mayor of Hyndburn, said: "It rained but everyone had a great day."
