RESIDENTS are up in arms at a proposal to set up a gypsy encampment on land near their homes.

People living in Douglas Road and Peel Drive in Bacup say the site would seriously devalue property prices and bring 'undesirables' into the area.

An application has been submitted by the Gypsy Council to Rossendale Borough Council for up to 30 families to live on the site, with additional amenity blocks being built.

More than 100 people attended a meeting about the proposal at the Traveller's Rest pub with a further meeting planned at the Rockcliffe Club, Rockcliffe Road.

Peter Cooke, of Ramsey Avenue, who lives near the proposed site, said feelings among local people were running high.

He said: "The residents are very upset and worried about having a gypsy encampment in their back yard.

"I live 200 yards from this site and do not relish seeing gypsy caravans whenever I open my door.

"This is a residential area and most of the people who live on this estate are from out of town.

"Many have invested a significant amount of money in their property. To disrupt their lives by allowing gypsies to live in their back yards is just unthinkable.

"It would devalue their houses as no-one would buy near a gypsy encampment and the site would attract undesirables from all over the country."

Notices informing residents of the proposals have been put up by Rossendale Borough Council and a public meeting to discuss the controversial plan will be held tomorrow at Rossendale Town Hall.
