A NEW drive to help adults with literacy or numeracy problems has been launched.

The Bury Learning Partnership has drawn up a strategy to improve people's basic skills and job prospects.

Mr Des Finn, chairman of the basic skills task group, said: "Of every 100 adults in Bury with literacy and numeracy needs, only eight are getting basic skills tuition.

"The aim is that, through partnership working, we will raise the demand for basic skills learning from target groups by promoting innovative and flexible programmes of learning."

The drive has been backed by Bury North MP David Chaytor and his Bury South colleague Ivan Lewis, a junior education minister.

Various presentations were made at the launch, which was held at the Village Hotel in Heap Bridge, Bury, by representatives from the public and private sectors, including local businesses and trade unions.

Councillor Steve Perkins, executive member for lifelong learning, said that 24 per cent of adults have problems with literacy and numeracy.

"It is vital that support and encouragement is given to individuals to improve their basic skills," he said.

"The labour market is changing all the time. More skills and qualifications will be needed in future and we want to ensure that everyone in Bury can take up those employment opportunities when they arise.

"Adequate basic skills are a pre-requisite for higher skills development and this new strategy is a significant step forward."
