HOW is it that whilst the uproar concerning the closure of council care homes is still on-going, the County Council can announce a scheme to give a £500,000 facelift (total re-development) to a little-used railway station -- Burnley Central (LET, September 10)?

We are told: "Areas of the building have become redundant, resulting in parts becoming 'dark, empty and threatening."

Improvements to all facilities can be made at a fraction of the proposed expenditure and without making a "futuristic space-age showpiece" (c.f. The Millennium Dome)

This bizarre, pathetic, money-wasting idea was made almost risible by the report in the same issue announcing yet another strike by ASLEF which for 48 hours would "cripple" First North-Western services.

At least, so far, the bus drivers on the local Burnley services aren't striking, although it took me two hours on Sunday to travel from Harle Syke to Worsthorne via our very expensive, modern bus station. Why?

A considerable number of buses were cancelled because there weren't any drivers. Why? Because of the turn-over of drivers who are dissatisfied with their terms of employment, especially pay.

R BRACEWELL (Mr), Ormerod Street, Worsthorne, Burnley.
