HAVING returned to Blackburn after 11 years abroad, I am constantly amazed at the ineptitude, lack of professionalism and common sense of some members of Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Two recent examples of what seems to be muddled thinking not in tune with the general wishes of the public they are elected to serve are:

1. Renovation of Church Street. The general idea generally believed a good one. However I was rather disappointed with the final result (but perhaps that is personal taste) but then appalled that what was supposed to be a pedestrian area has given way to car parking. How on earth one can expect to encourage pavement-style cafs whilst being polluted with car exhausts beggar's belief. Also the presence of cars spoils the whole effect of what could be a relaxed traffic-free area.

2. One particular pedestrian area was recently enhanced by a charming little bistro style caf next door to Marks and Spencers store on King William Street. It was with shock and dismay that I have learnt that it has been ordered to close!

Not withstanding the idea that the Council is trying to encourage retail shops in this area, it must be noted that the previous occupant of the premises sold up. From personal experience I found the caf giving a high standard of friendly and efficient service and appears to be thriving, thereby obviously meeting a public demand.
