CHILDREN will be served up a treat next week as the Cliff Richard Tennis Trail visits schools to encourage pupils to pick up a racket and serve an ace.

Ten primary schools in the area will receive tennis equipment and funds for 20 hours of coaching from staff at South Ribble Tennis Centre, Bamber Bridge.

A tour bus will pull up at the schools and pupils will take part in 30 minutes of co-ordination activities followed by coaching in racket skills.

There will be giveaways and prizes for pupils to keep them on their toes.

Sue Mappin, director of the foundation said: "We aim to encourage children to involve themselves in a sport such as tennis that can improve their overall well being and provide new opportunities for them socially, mentally and physically.

"If a few end up at Wimbledon in another ten years that will be an added bonus."

Tennis and fitness professionals visit the schools and talk to children about sport.

Scott Reid, tennis development officer at South Ribble Tennis Club, said: "It's lots of fun. It's important to let children enjoy themselves with sport in this computer age.

"Getting children playing tennis can only encourage a healthier lifestyle."

Sir Cliff said: "Over the past ten years I am delighted that the trail has had such a strong impact on the lives of so many children."
