A CONCERNED father has called on a council to make safe a redundant depot.

Dad-of-two Laurie Harrison said the former Ribble Valley Council depot near his home in Kirkmoor Road, Clitheroe, was in an appalling state.

His sons, Jack, nine, and William, five, were among a group of children who entered the site and claimed to have discovered live cables and 12ft doors hanging off their hinges. He said: "Several local children, my sons included, entered the site and found live bare cables coming out of the floor and doors hanging from their hinges.

"The kids were just playing, not doing anything wrong. The gates to the compound were wide open. The site is unsecured and in a mess. It looks like something from Belfast and the council should tidy up the site and make it secure before someone gets hurt."

Ribble Valley Council's commercial director John Heap said council vehicles had operated from the site until a month ago.

"The compound is currently unused and up for sale.

"We will certainly do everything we can to ensure that there is no danger to anyone, whether or not they are supposed to be on the site," he said today.

A spokesman at Clitheroe Police said they were aware that children had been playing on the site.

"We have notified the Ribble Valley Council, which is responsible for the depot," he said.
