Leigh RMI 2 Yeovil Town 4 by David Magilton

THREE successive defeats have put Leigh deep in trouble in the Conference.

They are just one place off the bottom after suffering agonies against Yeovil, who in stark contrast went to the top of the table after stretching their unbeaten run to 10 games.

Leigh boss Steve Waywell would love to have that record but instead is faced with trying to bring in players to bolster his depleted and dejected squad.

Lady Luck did not shine on the Railwaymen and in particular goalkeeper Stuart Coburn, who made a string of brilliant saves including two penalties only to be beaten by the rebounds. RMI were also denied a penalty when the referee awarded an indirect free-kick, a feature of the game both managers acknowledged no longer exists.

Leigh found themselves swamped by the quick-passing Yeovil side and conceded a goal in the fourth minute when Terry Skiverton volleyed home after Nick Crittenden's corner had been headed on by Darren Way.

Fortunately Leigh bounced back against the run of play in the ninth minute when Ged Kielty pounced on a loose ball and smashed it home.

RMI led a charmed life but just when it looked as if they had weathered the storm fell to two goals in as many minutes.

Ian Monk was left sat on the floor by the tricky Michael McIndoe who cracked the ball into the top corner in the 51st minute. Gavin Williams was put in the clear and Neil Fitzhenry could do little other than bring him down in the box. Crittendon's spot kick was saved by Coburn but the ball bounced back to the Yeovil player who did not miss a second time.

The Railwaymen did not cave in and when Dino Maamria whipped in a cross Stuart Whittaker's brave header gave Leigh hope.

It did not last long as Williams raced in the clear again and this time Coburn brought him down as he pushed the ball past the keeper. Coburn again blocked Crittendon's penalty attempt but could only watch in dismay as Carl Alford pounced on the ball and cracked it home.

Leigh were then denied a penalty when Maamria was impeded in the area when clean through and with it went their hopes of a comeback.
