MOTORISTS in Ramsbottom face new powers to enforce on-street parking and waiting restrictions.
From tomorrow responsibility for the enforcement of on-street parking and yellow line offences will pass from Greater Manchester Police to Bury Metro, the council which covers the area.
Motorists will face fines of £60 if they ignore restrictions which will apply to all areas in the borough.
A trial period will run from October 1 to 14 when tickets will be issued but fines will not be collected to allow motorists time to adjust to the new system.
Bury Metro's executive member for the environment and transport Coun Stella Smith said: "What we will see is a tightening up on illegal parking and motorists should be aware of this.
"In recent times police resources have been stretched and problems of cars parked in cycle lanes, on yellow lines or spaces allocated to disabled drivers, taxis or buses have occurred. We are determined to change this."
Although there will be an increase in the number of parking attendants, offences eligible for a ticket will remain the same.
