PUPILS have planted the seeds of success in their playground garden which was runner-up in the "Green Finger's Challenge" national competition.
Judges were impressed by the garden's range of cabbages, lettuces, potatoes, herbs, chilli plants, strawberries and onions, all grown by pupils at Roe Lee Primary School, Blackburn,
The garden, behind the main school building, was started in autumn 2000 with the help of Groundwork, the local environmental organisation.
Club members tend the garden at an after-school club supervised by their teacher, Louise Bolderson. The children decide what to grow each season, plant the seeds and care for them as they grow.
The children now plan to bring wildlife into the garden. Bird boxes are already under construction together with squirrel and hedgehog dens.
