CLARETS boss Stan Ternent reflected on the sacking of his old pal Peter Reid by Sunderland and claimed: "They'll do extremely well to get a better manager than him."

And as he did for Brian Flynn when he was dismissed by Wrexham last season, Ternent has extended an open invite to Reid to come down to the training ground at Gawthorpe.

"Peter knows he is welcome but it is up to him to decide what he wants to do," explained Ternent, himself a former Sunderland player and coach.

"I have spoken to him and he is obviously very disappointed but things build up and build up and the powers that be made their decision.

"Every side goes through a bad time, even Man United have done it, and I don't really know enough about it.

"What I do know is Peter Reid is a proven manager and he has done very well in seven years there. But that's life and it happens to managers, we all know that.

"I am sure he will have the chance to get back into the game at some point but it is a case of if he wants to.

"I have seen that Mick McCarthy has been linked with the job and he has only managed Millwall while David O'Leary is another and he has managed for what, three and a half years.

"Peter is a good pal of mine and he knows that the best place to be is out on the training ground with the players. If that means he wants to come and see us, then he will always be welcome."

Black Cats fans celebrating the departure of Reid might just reflect what happened to the last club to sack him.

Within a couple of seasons Manchester City tumbled out of the top flight and eventually into Division Two.
