Tony Smith, whose Giants team take on Leigh Centurions in Saturday's Grand Final at Widnes, has been named Northern Ford Premiership coach of the year.

Smith received his award at a presentation dinner at Elland Road, Leeds, where three of his players made the all-star team.

Huddersfield, who have the chance to equal Wigan's record-winning run of 29 if they win on Saturday, were the first winners of a new NFP merit award to mark their exceptional performance.

Batley's Australian scrum-half Glen Tomlinson took the player of the year award after breaking the club's try-scoring record in his farewell season.
