BLACKBURN striker Matt Jansen could be in line for a dramatic comeback in the reserves tomorrow night.

The 24-year-old striker hasn't kicked a ball competitively since he suffered serious head injuries following a motorbike accident during the summer.

But the former England Under 21 international has tentatively pencilled himself in for a possible return at Everton tomorrow - three months ahead of schedule.

And, such has been the speed of his recovery, that he's even targeting a possible role in the second leg of Rovers' UEFA Cup tie with Celtic at Ewood early next month.

"I'm really looking forward to getting back into it," said Jansen.

"It's been a bit frustrating not being able to head a ball but now I can and I'm not getting any repercussions from that so I can't wait to get back into the thick of things.

"I certainly hope to be involved in the first team again before Christmas.

"I wouldn't mind being involved in the Celtic games and, you never know, it could happen.

"A lot depends on how I do against Everton tomorrow and how I then progress from there.

"But the Celtic game is a possible target and it would be a dream come true for me if that happened.

"Fitness wise, I'm in fairly decent condition. I've done a couple of bleep tests and I was virtually at the same level I was last season when I was playing.

"So that shouldn't be too much of a problem but match fitness is a different thing and it's going to take me a few games to get used to it again."

Such was the seriousness of Jansen's injury that there were fears for his career in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

But, thanks to the help and support of Rovers' medical staff, Graeme Souness's leading scorer of the last two seasons now stands on the brink of an amazing return.

And he has thanked the club for the way they have stood by him during the darkest days of his career.

"Everyone at the club has been fantastic, including the gaffer.

"I thought I might have got into trouble for being on a scooter in the first place but he said that I'd been through enough and he was very understanding which was very comforting.

"Obviously, I regret it and this wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been on it.

"But that's in the past now.

"In hindsight, you can say a lot of things but I've got to look forward now and focus all my energy on getting back to where I was before."

Souness will check on Jansen's condition today before making a final decision as to whether or not he will return tomorrow.

But the manager will not take any unnecessary risks with the striker given the nature of his injury.
