POLICE and motoring organisations have this week combined to provide free, pre-winter tyre and maintenance checks in Blackburn.
The car health inspections preceded a tyre safety enforcement campaign, starting on Tuesday next, October 22, during which police will be carrying out random checks.
The tyre and safety clinic was held on the car park at Asda yesterday and today, a collaboration between the police, Blackburn with Darwen Road Safety Unit, the Tyre Industry Council and the AA.
Sgt Stuart Isherwood said it was important that people prepared their vehicles for wintry conditions and urged motorists to make certain they checked tyres, anti-freeze, oil and water levels, lights and windscreen wipers before the bad weather arrived. Information leaflets are available.
The police enforcement campaign will involve roadside checks and Sergeant Isherwood warned that a single defective tyre could mean a £60 fine and three penalty points.
"Two or more defective tyres could result in a court appearance and cars being deemed to be in a dangerous condition. They could be prohibited from the road until a new MOT certificate is provided so these checks could save time and money," said Sgt Isherwood.
