YOUNGSTERS at Walshaw High School, Burnley, were involved a national attempt for a place in the Guinness Book of World Records yesterday for the biggest simultaneous sing.

Year Seven girls joined 100,000 people across Great Britain in singing the song Tell Me Why linked to a live broadcast.

All the participants began singing at 2.45pm after the start was co-ordinated by a countdown on the internet and the song is due to be released as a single.

About 150 pupils aged between 11 and 12 gathered in the canteen at Walshaw to take part in the event, which was raising money for children with cancer.

Head of music at the school, Fiona Lawden, entered the school in the big sing-along after reading about the bid in a press release.

She said: "I thought it would be a good idea for the youngsters to get involved in something fun but also for a good cause.

"It went brillliantly and they were all asking if they could do it again. There were so many happy faces.

"It's not often that you get to have so many people together to have a sing along.

"We had to hold it in the canteen because the year 11 pupils were doing their mock examinations. Everyone was elated by the end of it.

"I have to send off all the paper work now so that it can be confirmed and then they will send us a letter to say whether we were successful.

"We will also get a framed certficate which will go on the wall in reception for everyone to see."

The children were practising the song during lessons during the last week after only being given the words a week before the live attempt.
