DAVID Dunn's mystery injury has left boss Graeme Souness scratching his head after his scan appeared to give him the all-clear.

The 22-year-old midfielder pulled up with his latest hamstring injury at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday, having lasted just 11 minutes against Bolton.

It was feared he could be out for as long as six weeks, missing the busy Premiership Christmas period as well as matches in both the Worthington and FA Cups.

But manager Graeme Souness explained this morning: "It looks as though the scan has shown it is not a pull, but there is no doubt he has is getting some pain from somewhere.

"It is possible it might have something to do with a nerve but we are going to have to wait and see.

"He had scans on the hamstring last week and they were clear. That is why he played at Bolton because he had trained properly last week without any problem.

"He says he has been feeling good but there is clearly a problem. It is a very busy time and I know that we could certainly do without any more hamstring problems."

With there being little or no likelihood of Souness having fresh funds made available when the transfer window re-opens in just over three weeks time, the Rovers boss is going to have to cope with the players he has and to that end a number of first teamers will be in action for the reserves at Morecambe tonight when Birmingham City are the visitors.

"Matt Jansen will play, as will Ciccio Grabbi and Keith Gillespie," he explained. "It is important that we give Matt, especially, some games and that is all we can do at the moment. We keep saying we have to be patient with him and that is how he will be handled."

Meanwhile Rovers teenage sensation Jay McEveley is already being tipped for international honours, although it is not sure whether that will be with England or Scotland.

The 17-year-old left back made his Premiership debut at the Reebok Stadium, following on from an impressive display against Rotherham United in the Worthington Cup a few days earlier.

Born in Liverpool, he has a Scottish father and former Scotland skipper Graeme Souness knows the youngster could soon be called up for Under-18 games by both countries.

"I am keeping well out of that one," smiled Souness today.

McEveley has started the last two games in the problem position of left back and has certain risen to the occasion both times. But Souness is also aware of the need to be patient with him, although for different reasons to Jansen.

ROVERS' Premiership clash against Fulham on April 5 has been selected as a Sky game.

The match will now be played on April 7 (kick off 8pm).
