THE other day I sat on a wall of Clitheroe Castle and looked down over the River Valley.

It was raining hard but it was still not easy to imagine that 340 million years ago our area was covered in a warm and shallow sea.

Animals called Crinoids have become known as sea lilies because of its shape.

Gradually the sea levels declined and the bodies of the Crinoids were pressed into rocks which are now known as limestone.

All our local quarries are very rich in fossils and Clitheroe Castle Museum has lots of excellent displays relating to limestone and its fossils. Near to Clitheroe there are fascinating old quarries around Salthill and Brungerley and we are lucky to live in an area which has world famous fossil deposits.
