THE recent South Wales school bus crash fatality should be a wake-up call to our transport undertakings, school authorities, police and the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety.
The condition of school buses, the way they are loaded -- children standing round the driver etc. -- and the way they are driven as a result of all this, demands the immediate attention of the authorities.
We must ensure our children are kept safe -- even if they themselves are causing much of the danger. It is most unfair that bus drivers are expected to operate under such difficult conditions -- and are very likely to take the rap if something goes wrong.
I doubt much will be done -- the LPRS, local traffic officials and enforcement personnel don't do 'difficult.' Far simpler to rely on a camera to snap someone at 36mph, on a traffic and pedestrian-free road. The big benefit of course is the revenue stream that this provides.
